Abstract

Platelets play critical roles in both physiological haemostasis and pathological thrombosis. Recent studies also reveal pleiotropic platelet functions in inflammation, immunity, wound healing as well as cancer metastasis. Concerning platelet dysfunctions, ideal laboratory screening tests are lacking. Bleeding time and Platelet function assays (PFAs)are insensitive to mild platelet dysfunction. Detailed bleeding history and identification of conditions or medicines associated with platelet dysfunction are more informative. For hereditary or unknown platelet dysfunction, platelet aggregation and release assays are useful for diagnosis but labour-intensive and very costly. Finally, platelet function tests are helpful to determine the high on-treatment platelet reactivity (HTPR) in patients taking therapeutic antiplatelet agents. The HTPR is associated with poor thrombotic outcomes requiring treatment modifications.
